Renee Reacts: Money Heist 💰

Money Heist
It's been a month since I've finished watching the Spanish series Money Heist and the adrenaline rush I had from it is still wearing out. Whew...this series was something. I don't know what to watch next because it was just too awesome that I feel like the next one would be completely underwhelming. I honestly don't know what will come up to par with this series and so I resolved to read my books until all the rush I felt from watching this one washes out off me. So until that happens, I thought it would be nice to write down all my thoughts about it.

For those of you haven't watched or heard about Money Heist, you can google it, haha! Kidding aside, it's a Spanish crime drama series by Alex Pina released last May 2017. It originally has 15 episodes but when Netflix acquired the rights to stream it globally, they re-cut the series into 22 shorter episodes and divided it into 2 seasons. After the success of Season 1 and 2, they renewed the series to have a Part 3 and 4 which will have 16 episodes in total. Season 3 was released last July which leaves Season 4 for the next year. If you want to really feel the thrill and drama and the authentic emotions of the actors, I highly recommend you to watch the undubbed episodes. Sorry, Netflix, I love you, but dubbing the series into English just doesn't sit well with me. And another reason why I love the undubbed episodes more is that as a Filipino, as a Bisaya, there are sooooo many words in the Spanish language that I know. Because, yenno, we were once colonized by the Spaniards, and so there are a lot of Spanish words that have been adopted into our own language. I was so into the series that after watching an episode, there's a heavy urge in me to learn Spanish, haha!

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's talk about the plot. I don't know why I had to rat all those things out when you can just read them out in Wikipedia but, oh well, *flips hair*. Okay, so the plot goes like this... A group of misfits was recruited by the Professor - the mastermind of the heist, to run a multi-day assault on the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid. The misfits were all criminals and each one has a specialty. They go by city names such as Rio, Tokyo, Berlin, Nairobi, Helsinki, Oslo, Moscow, and Denver. And I think it was so cool to have a city name, too, so I go around calling myself Jakarta to be part of the group. 😂 The plan was to take over the Royal Mint, seal it off from the outside world, take on hostages to print new money inside the Casa and escape with 2.4 billion euros. A lot has happened over the span of 128 hours and the plan to have no bloodshed failed.

I dived into this series knowing so little about it. I just saw it trending on twitter and my friend persuaded me to watch it. She gave me the link so I thought why not. I finished all 3 seasons in just a week. I was pumped up. Money Heist is super thrilling that it elevated my standards when it comes to series. I didn't really expect to love it so much but I ended up being super invested in the characters. And their anthem "Bella Ciao" was stuck in my head for days.

I really cannot explain why I loved this series so much. Maybe it came to me at the time when what I needed most was entertainment that doesn't relate to anything about what I'm currently going through. Maybe the intricate storyline appealed so much to me. Maybe it was because I find the Spanish language so sexy. Maybe it was because the portrayal of every actor to their character was so real that you cannot imagine them having another life outside the series.

Money Heist is a complete package and it surpassed my expectations, considering I didn't have any, haha. I can say so much more but I should just end it here and say one more thing. You should definitely watch it if you haven't yet. It is definitely worth the time.

Oh, and if you ask me who my favorite character is, it's definitely a tie between Berlin and the Professor. 😉 xx
